‘Months of planning and rehearsal’ for Maduro seizure: top US general

A senior US military official has said that any potential operation to seize Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro would require months of careful planning, coordination and rehearsal, underscoring the complexity and sensitivity of such a mission.
Speaking in a recent briefing, the top US general emphasised that operations involving the capture of a foreign head of state are among the most challenging military undertakings. He noted that they demand extensive intelligence gathering, logistical preparation and coordination with multiple agencies to minimise risks and unintended consequences.
The comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas, as the United States continues to recognise opposition leader Edmundo González as Venezuela’s legitimate president following disputed election results. The US has imposed wide-ranging sanctions on the Maduro government, citing concerns over democracy, human rights and electoral integrity.
The general declined to comment on whether any specific plans were currently in place, stressing that the remarks were made in a hypothetical context. He added that the US military routinely prepares for a wide range of contingencies as part of its global responsibilities.
Venezuela’s government has repeatedly rejected US criticism, accusing Washington of interference in its internal affairs. President Maduro has warned against foreign intervention, saying it would violate the country’s sovereignty and international law.
Analysts say the statement highlights the delicate balance the US faces in applying pressure on the Maduro administration while avoiding actions that could escalate into direct military conflict in the region.
