Abu Dhabi court orders man to repay $16,000 to friend

An Abu Dhabi civil court has ordered a man to repay $16,000 (approximately Dh58,700) to a friend after ruling that the amount was a personal loan that had not been returned.
According to court documents, the plaintiff stated that he had transferred the money to the defendant in good faith to help him cover personal expenses, based on a mutual understanding that the amount would be repaid within an agreed period. However, despite repeated requests, the defendant failed to return the money, prompting the plaintiff to file a legal case.
The court examined bank transfer records and written communications submitted as evidence, which confirmed that the funds had been transferred and supported the plaintiff’s claim that the amount was a loan rather than a gift. The defendant denied owing the money but was unable to provide proof that the amount had been repaid or that it was given without obligation.
In its ruling, the court stated that financial transactions between individuals must be honored according to agreed terms, and that the evidence clearly established the defendant’s liability. The court ordered the defendant to repay the full $16,000 to the plaintiff, along with court fees.
The judgment highlights the importance of clear documentation in personal financial dealings and reinforces the UAE judiciary’s stance on protecting the rights of individuals in private loan disputes.
