‘Many tried to destroy Somnath Temple, India, but did not succeed’, Modi hails centuries of resilience

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the centuries-long resilience of the Somnath Temple, saying repeated attempts were made to destroy the historic shrine, but it continued to rise again as a symbol of India’s enduring cultural and spiritual strength.
Addressing a gathering, the Prime Minister said Somnath is not just a temple but a living testament to the nation’s civilisational continuity. “Many tried to destroy Somnath Temple over the centuries, but they did not succeed. Somnath stands today as a symbol of resilience, faith and India’s eternal spirit,” Modi said.
Located in Gujarat’s Prabhas Patan, the Somnath Temple is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and holds immense religious significance for Hindus. The temple has been rebuilt several times in history after facing invasions and destruction, reflecting what Modi described as the unbroken resolve of the Indian people.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of preserving cultural heritage, stating that India’s monuments and traditions connect the present generation with the values and sacrifices of the past. He said the restoration and development of heritage sites play a vital role in strengthening national identity and pride.
Modi noted that the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple after Independence symbolised India’s resurgence and confidence as a free nation. He added that such landmarks continue to inspire generations by reminding them of the country’s ability to overcome adversity.
The remarks come as the government places renewed emphasis on cultural heritage, spiritual tourism and the conservation of historical sites across the country.
